     In order to understand the reasons and strategies that the Americans used to annex Hawaii, one could look at a modern example of American Imperialism, such as the war in Iraq, and find parallels in reasons and strategies.

                         Hawaii                                                                     Iraq 

The high demand for sugar:

     During the times when the colonization of Hawaii was commencing, there was a high demand for sugar. This was especially during the Civil War when the North banned the use of Southern sugar.

The high demand for crude oil:

It has been suggested in the news that a reason why we went into the war with Iraq was for the crude oil.

American military:

     Once the American military arrived in Hawaii, many Hawaiians started to protest against the military. Soon the military said that they had to stay in Hawaii to “keep the peace” between the Kanaka Maoli. 

American military:

     Another reason why we are in Iraq is to “keep the peace” between the Shiites, the Sunnis, and the Kurds.

Strategic military:

     Since Hawaii was located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, it was an ideal military position for the American military.

Strategic military:

     The Middle East still has a strong American military presence.

 

Spread of Christianity:

     The main goal of the missionaries who first landed in Hawaii was to convert the Kanaka Maoli from their native polytheism to Christianity.

Spread of Christianity:

     The war created a benefit to Christian missionaries who have an opportunity to spread Christian values to Muslims.

American Democracy:

     The Hawaiian Monarchy was overthrown and soon replaced with an American backed democracy.

American Democracy:

     American troops overthrew Saddam Hussein and now they are in the process of trying to set up a democracy.
